Cyber Monday
cyber- Monday
- Meaning
- The Monday after Thanksgiving, marketed as an online shopping day.
- Source words
- cyber- + Monday
- Coined by
- Ellen Davis & Scott Silverman
- Year
- 2005
Background
Davis and Silverman of Shop.org coined the phrase in a 2005 press release to give e-commerce a parallel to Black Friday. Unlike Black Friday, which is organic, Cyber Monday was a deliberate marketing creation that succeeded.
Contemporary (2000–)
Faster coinage, faster canonisation. Brexit and podcast both reached the OED within a decade of first use — historically rapid. Social media has made visibility, not invention, the rate-limiting step.
Two words, one coinage.
