Background

Popularised by René Étiemble's 1964 book *Parlez-vous franglais?* — a cultural complaint about Anglicisation. Unlike *Spanglish*, the term is usually pejorative and culturally freighted with the Académie française's purist mission.

Mid-century: TV and science

Two engines dominated: television (sitcom, televangelist) and post-war big science (pulsar, transistor). Many mid-century coinages came from scientific style sheets and industry journals.

Two words, one coinage.
