Vol. 08 · Shakespeare ·Hamlet, Act I.v ·Hamlet
"There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, than are dreamt of in our philosophy."
Not quite the line.
How it's usually quoted
"There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, than are dreamt of in our philosophy."
What Shakespeare actually wrote
"There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, / Than are dreamt of in your philosophy." Hamlet — Hamlet, Act I.v
Why it matters
"Your," not "our." Hamlet is ribbing Horatio's Wittenberg-bred scepticism, not speaking for the human race. The universalised version misses the jab.
