Vol. 08 · Shakespeare ·Macbeth, Act II.ii ·Macbeth (reporting the voice)

"Macbeth shall sleep no more."

Not quite the line.

How it's usually quoted
"Macbeth shall sleep no more."
What Shakespeare actually wrote
"Methought I heard a voice cry "Sleep no more! / Macbeth does murder sleep."" Macbeth (reporting the voice) — Macbeth, Act II.ii

Why it matters

The voice cries a universal prohibition first; Macbeth's own curse comes second. Short quotation skips the cosmic judgement and keeps only the personal.

More from the canon.
