Vol. 08 · Shakespeare ·Macbeth, Act I.i ·First Witch
"When shall we three meet again, in thunder, lightning, or in rain?"
Not quite the line.
How it's usually quoted
"When shall we three meet again, in thunder, lightning, or in rain?"
What Shakespeare actually wrote
"When shall we three meet again? / In thunder, lightning, or in rain?" First Witch — Macbeth, Act I.i
Why it matters
The punctuation matters — Shakespeare wrote two questions, not one. Runs the lines together and it sounds like a weather forecast; separates them and it is a ritual call and response.
