PSYCHOSIS = break from reality. NEUROSIS = anxiety / distress.
PSYCHOSIS involves loss of contact with reality (delusions, hallucinations). NEUROSIS (now dated clinically) described everyday anxiety and distress without that break. They are not severity levels of the same thing.
