THESIS = position. HYPOTHESIS = testable proposition.
A THESIS is a proposition defended by argument — the central claim of an essay or dissertation. A HYPOTHESIS is a proposition advanced for testing, typically empirical. Social sciences use both; they are not interchangeable.
