"My kingdom for a horse!"

They never said that.

What people say
"My kingdom for a horse!"
What was actually said
"A horse! a horse! my kingdom for a horse!" King Richard III — Richard III (1593) V.iv

Why it stuck

The line is triple — two calls for a horse, then the exchange. The condensed version loses both the panic and the rhetorical shape.

Richard is dismounted and exposed in the final battle at Bosworth. The triple structure is the desperation.
