Vol. 08 · Shakespeare ·The Tempest, Act V.i ·Miranda

"O brave new world!"

Not quite the line.

How it's usually quoted
"O brave new world!"
What Shakespeare actually wrote
"O brave new world, / That has such people in't!" Miranda — The Tempest, Act V.i

Why it matters

Miranda is innocent; Prospero immediately mutters "'Tis new to thee." The line is bitterly ironic — Huxley's novel doubled the irony; pop use takes it sincerely.

More from the canon.
