"O, I have lost my reputation!"

Not quite the line.

How it's usually quoted
"O, I have lost my reputation!"
What Shakespeare actually wrote
"Reputation, reputation, reputation! O, I have lost my reputation!" Cassio — Othello, Act II.iii

Why it matters

Cassio repeats "reputation" three times — the tripling is the drama. Quoting only the sentence that follows drops the drunken anguish that sells the line.

More from the canon.
