Solid vs. Liquid
Matter with a fixed shape versus matter that takes the shape of its container.
The comparisoni
“Ice is a solid — fixed shape. Water (above 0°C) is a liquid; it takes its container's shape.”
The ruleii
¶
SOLID = fixed. LIQUID = shape of vessel.
SOLID holds both its shape and volume — molecules vibrate in place. LIQUID holds its volume but takes the shape of its container — molecules slide past each other. GAS does neither. These are three of matter's classical phases.
Memory aidiii
Remember it like this
Solid = shape. Liquid = flow.
